1. A step-by-step guide to the medina
The medina is compact and best explored on foot. Here is a route of about 3 hours, in a logical order, from the gates of the medina to the Ras el Maa spring. You can do the stops in a different order if you prefer to wander.
Stop 1: entering the medina through Bab el Aïn (15 min)
Bab el Aïn is one of the gateways into the medina, on the side of the modern town. It is the right place to start: as you walk through the gate, the modern town gives way to blue and white lanes. Take a few minutes to get your bearings and start taking photos: morning light is the softest.
Stop 2: Outa el Hammam square (30 min)
This is the heart of the medina. The lively square is lined with cafés and terrace restaurants, facing the kasbah and the Great Mosque with its octagonal minaret. It is an ideal first break: a mint tea while watching life go by. The mosque is reserved for Muslim worshippers; admire it from the outside.
Stop 3: the kasbah (1 h)
The fortified kasbah dates back to the founding of the town in the 15th century (1471). Inside you will find a garden with an Andalusian feel, a museum devoted to the region's arts and traditions, and a tower with views over the medina's rooftops and the surrounding mountains. Allow about an hour to see everything without hurrying. It is a pleasant visit in the heat of the day, as the courtyard and garden are shaded.
Stop 4: the blue lanes and the souks (45 min)
Leave the square through the lanes: this is where Chefchaouen becomes the town of photos. Walls, stairs and doors are painted blue; several explanations circulate for the colour, and everyone has their own. Shops sell local crafts: woven wool blankets and clothing, hats, baskets, soaps, spices and goat cheese. Bargain with a smile and don't insist: the exchange is part of the experience.
Stop 5: Ras el Maa (30 min)
At the entrance to the medina, the Ras el Maa spring ("the head of the water") feeds the town. The water flows down in small cascades and streams in a cool, peaceful setting, and locals like to meet here. It is a very good place to end your medina visit, with a tea or a freshly squeezed orange juice.
Stop 6: sunset over the town (1 h)
To end the day, head up to a viewpoint over the town. The Spanish mosque on the hill is the best-known spot for watching the evening light bring out the shades of blue: allow about half an hour's uphill walk from the medina, in good shoes. Set off early so you do not walk back down in the dark.
| Stop | Time | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Bab el Aïn | 15 min | The starting point, soft morning light |
| Outa el Hammam square | 30 min | The heart of the medina, tea break |
| Kasbah | 1 h | Garden, museum and views from the tower |
| Blue lanes and souks | 45 min | Photos and crafts |
| Ras el Maa | 30 min | The spring, a cool break |
| Viewpoint | 1 h | Sunset over the town |
2. Practical tips for your visit
- Comfortable shoes: the lanes slope and have many steps.
- Clothing: light, covering clothes are appreciated, especially near religious sites.
- Photos: always ask before photographing a person. For empty lanes, come early in the morning.
- Money: keep some small change for cafés and small shops.
- Languages: you can easily get by in French; Spanish and English are also very common.
- Medina: it is compact enough to explore without a guide using the stops above; if you would rather be accompanied, ask when booking an activity.
3. Beyond the medina: Rif nature
Chefchaouen is also a gateway to the mountains. Talassemtane National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, begins at its doorstep. The trail to the Akchour waterfall (about 4 hours round trip) is the most popular; local guides also offer multi-day treks.
To cover more ground without walking all day, there is another way to discover these landscapes: by quad.
4. Discover the Rif by quad, with a guide (book online)
The trails around Chefchaouen cross forests and ridges with views over the blue city. Rides are on 4x4 quads, with a professional guide, and include a tea break and a photo break. One person per quad; the price is per quad.
| Duration | Tour | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | Kalaa | First time, tight schedule |
| 2 hours | Tesmlal | More trail and more views |
| 3 hours | Akchour or Chwehat | The classic, Talassemtane landscapes |
| 5 hours | Azilane | A real mountain outing |
| Full day | Bouhachem | Total immersion in the Rif |
